Job Description

Clinical Assistant

The Clinical Assistant 2 provides clinical and administrative support in a rural ambulatory care clinic, delivering care to patients across all age groups—from infants to elderly. The role is essential in ensuring efficient clinic operations, smooth patient flow, and optimal provider support.

This position performs both basic and moderately advanced clinical tasks beyond Clinical Assistant 1 scope, based on competency. Responsibilities include direct patient care support, data documentation, and coordination of clinic activities in collaboration with healthcare providers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare for patient visits by reviewing charts, updating medical history, and ensuring required documentation
  • Obtain and record vital signs (BP, temperature, weight, SpO₂, respiration, vision, etc.)
  • Assist providers during examinations, procedures, and minor treatments
  • Perform clinical procedures within competency, including:
    • Nebulizer treatments, ear lavage, cast removal
    • EKGs, peak flow testing, DM foot screenings
    • Specimen collection and point-of-care testing (POCT)
  • Support patient care activities such as ambulation, transport, and basic assistance
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in electronic medical records (EMR)
  • Ensure patient records, medications, and immunization data are updated
  • Prepare, clean, and maintain exam rooms and clinical equipment
  • Manage inventory, supplies, and infection control procedures
  • Provide basic patient education and discharge instructions under provider direction
  • Communicate with patients and staff via phone, messages, and clinic coordination tasks

Additional Responsibilities

  • Support clinic flow by assisting with cross-coverage as needed
  • Respond to changes in patient condition and escalate concerns appropriately
  • Participate in staff meetings, training, and quality improvement activities
  • Follow all safety, infection control, and organizational policies

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED (required)
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (required)
  • One of the following:
    • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) training OR
    • 1 year healthcare/CNA/EMT/CA experience OR
    • Equivalent healthcare or customer service experience as defined

Skills & Competencies

  • Knowledge of basic clinical procedures and medical terminology
  • Strong communication and patient care skills
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced clinical environment
  • Proficiency in EMR systems and data entry
  • Competence in operating basic medical equipment (BP cuff, EKG, pulse oximeter, etc.)
  • Ability to recognize and respond to urgent patient needs appropriately
